What the license should say
In Hawaii you'll see one of these on an HVAC contractor's card, bid or truck:
- C-52 ventilating and air conditioning contractor
- Business; fabricates and installs warm-air heating, cooling, ventilating and air conditioning systems.
- C-40 refrigeration contractor
- Business; refrigeration units and walk-in boxes below fifty degrees Fahrenheit.
Hiring a company, not a person?
A C-52 (or C-40 for refrigeration) specialty contractor license; no license is needed for jobs of $1,500 or less unless a building permit is required.
Doing it yourself
Owners improving their own residence for their own use may register for the owner-builder exemption under HRS 444-2.5 but must hire licensed subcontractors for work that requires a license.
