HVAC licenses in
New York
New York has no statewide license for HVAC contractors. Cities and counties license them.
There's no state search to run. Check the license with the city or county where the work is (see below).
What the license should say
In New York you'll see one of these on an HVAC contractor's card, bid or truck:
- Oil burner equipment installer Class A (NYC)
- Individual licensed by NYC DOB to install oil-burning equipment of any type.
- Oil burner equipment installer Class B (NYC)
- Individual licensed by NYC DOB to install equipment using domestic-grade fuel oils one through four.
- Home improvement contractor (NYC, Suffolk, Nassau, Westchester)
- Business licensed by the local consumer affairs agency for residential work.
Hiring a company, not a person?
No state HVAC license; NYC licenses oil burner equipment installers through DOB, and residential HVAC contractors in NYC, Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester generally need the local home improvement contractor license.
City and county licenses
New York leaves HVAC contractor licensing to local governments. These are the largest with an online search.
