What the license should say
In Colorado you'll see one of these on an electrician's card, bid or truck:
- Master electrician
- Individual; state license issued by examination, endorsement or reciprocity.
- Journeyman electrician
- Individual; state license issued by examination, endorsement or reciprocity.
- Residential wireman
- Individual; state electrician license limited to residential work.
- Electrical contractor registration
- Business; registration with the State Electrical Board, renewed every three years.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Electrical contractor registration with the State Electrical Board, which includes an Acknowledgment of Responsibility form naming the responsible licensee.
Doing it yourself
No license is required to do electrical work on your own property or residence if all new work is inspected, but the exemption does not cover property built for sale, rental property or buildings open to the public (CRS 12-115-116(2)).
