Electrician licenses in
Florida
Florida licenses some electricians statewide and leaves the rest to cities and counties.
Official search run by Florida DBPR Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board at myfloridalicense.com.
What the license should say
In Florida you'll see one of these on an electrician's card, bid or truck:
- Certified electrical contractor (EC)
- Business or individual; statewide license, can contract anywhere in Florida.
- Registered electrical contractor (ER)
- Business or individual; may contract only in the cities or counties where it holds a local competency card; cannot contract for alarm systems.
- Specialty electrical contractor (ES/ET)
- Limited to one segment such as residential electrical, low voltage or signs.
- Alarm system contractor I or II
- Alarm systems; Class I includes fire alarms, Class II excludes fire.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Certified (statewide) or registered (local) electrical contractor license from DBPR; registered contractors also need the local competency card.
Doing it yourself
State law requires electrical contracting to be done by licensed electrical contractors, but s. 489.503(6) lets an owner apply for the permit, supervise and do electrical work on a home they will occupy and not sell or lease.
City and county licenses
Some places in Florida also license electricians locally.
