Electrician licenses in
Louisiana
Louisiana licenses some electricians statewide and leaves the rest to cities and counties.
Official search run by Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) at lslbc.gov.
What the license should say
In Louisiana you'll see one of these on an electrician's card, bid or truck:
- Electrical contractor (LSLBC commercial license, electrical classification)
- Business; required for electrical projects over $10,000 including labor and materials.
- Class A master electrical contractor (City of New Orleans)
- Individual; one per company, needed to pull city electrical permits.
- Class D journeyman electrician (City of New Orleans)
- Individual; must work under a Class A electrical contractor.
Hiring a company, not a person?
LSLBC commercial license with electrical classification for projects over $10,000; individual electricians are licensed by cities and parishes such as New Orleans and Jefferson Parish, not the state
Doing it yourself
An owner may build their own primary residence without an LSLBC license but must get permits and a homeowner exemption form from the local permit office
City and county licenses
Some places in Louisiana also license electricians locally.
