HVAC licenses in
Louisiana
Louisiana licenses some HVAC contractors statewide and leaves the rest to cities and counties.
Official search run by Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) at lslbc.gov.
What the license should say
In Louisiana you'll see one of these on an HVAC contractor's card, bid or truck:
- Mechanical contractor (LSLBC commercial license, mechanical classification)
- Business; required for mechanical projects over $10,000 including labor and materials.
- Class A master mechanical contractor (City of New Orleans)
- Individual; AC, refrigeration and gasfitting, one per company, needed for city mechanical permits.
- Class B journeyman mechanical (City of New Orleans)
- Individual; works under a Class A mechanical contractor.
Hiring a company, not a person?
LSLBC commercial license with mechanical classification for projects over $10,000; individual HVAC mechanics are licensed by cities and parishes such as New Orleans and Jefferson Parish, not the state
Doing it yourself
An owner may build their own primary residence without an LSLBC license but must get permits and a homeowner exemption form from the local permit office
City and county licenses
Some places in Louisiana also license HVAC contractors locally.
