What the license should say
In North Carolina you'll see one of these on an electrician's card, bid or truck:
- Unlimited electrical contractor
- Business with a listed qualified individual; any electrical project regardless of value.
- Intermediate electrical contractor
- Business with a listed qualified individual; projects up to $150,000.
- Limited electrical contractor
- Business with a listed qualified individual; projects up to $60,000 at 600 volts or less.
- Special restricted SP-SFD

- Special restricted SP-PH

Hiring a company, not a person?
The electrical contracting license is issued to the business with a named qualified individual who passed the exam; bonding ability is required for Intermediate and Unlimited licenses.
Doing it yourself
A person working on their own property for their own benefit is exempt from electrical contractor licensing when the property is not intended for rent, lease or sale (G.S. 87-43.1(5a)).
