What the license should say
In Minnesota you'll see one of these on an HVAC contractor's card, bid or truck:
- Mechanical contractor bond (state)
- Business; $25,000 bond filed with DLI to contract for heating, cooling, gas or refrigeration work.
- City HVAC contractor license or competency card
- Business or individual; issued by cities such as Minneapolis, not by DLI.
Hiring a company, not a person?
No state license; a business must file a $25,000 mechanical contractor bond with DLI and also meet local city licensing requirements
Doing it yourself
Minnesota has no state mechanical license for contractors or workers, so whether a homeowner may do their own HVAC work and pull the permit is set by city permit and licensing rules
City and county licenses
Minnesota leaves HVAC contractor licensing to local governments. These are the largest with an online search.
