Hiring a company, not a person?
Specialty contractor registration (HVAC) from L&I with a $15,000 bond and $200,000 public liability plus $50,000 property damage insurance or $250,000 combined single limit.
Doing it yourself
RCW 18.27.090 exempts a person working on his or her own property or personal residence from contractor registration unless acting as a contractor to sell, demolish or lease it.
