What the license should say
In Illinois you'll see one of these on a plumber's card, bid or truck:
- Licensed plumber
- Individual; passed the state exam after at least four years as a licensed apprentice.
- Registered plumbing contractor
- Any licensed plumber or apprentice who performs plumbing work for others; registers annually with IDPH.
- Licensed apprentice plumber
- Individual working under a sponsoring licensed plumber.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Annual plumbing contractor registration with IDPH; employees doing plumbing must be licensed plumbers or apprentices and at least one owner or officer must be a licensed plumber.
Doing it yourself
The owner occupant of a single family residence may plan, install, alter or repair its plumbing if it meets the Illinois Plumbing Code and only licensed plumbers assist (225 ILCS 320/3).
