What the license should say
In Massachusetts you'll see one of these on a plumber's card, bid or truck:
- Master plumber
- Individual, firm or corporation; keeps a place of business and may employ journeymen and apprentices.
- Journeyman plumber
- Individual; performs plumbing work and must carry the license.
- Master or journeyman gas fitter
- Individual; fuel gas piping and venting only, not plumbing.
Hiring a company, not a person?
A master plumber license held as an individual, firm or corporation; the Board issues corporate and partnership certificates for plumbing and gas
Doing it yourself
Massachusetts law prohibits anyone but a licensed plumber from installing, removing or repairing plumbing, and the local inspector issues permits only to licensed plumbers
