What the license should say
In Mississippi you'll see one of these on a plumber's card, bid or truck:
- MSBOC commercial license, Mechanical classification with Plumbing specialty
- Business; commercial jobs over $50,000, covering drainage, venting, water supply and related piping but not fuel gas or boilers.
- MSBOC residential plumbing subcontractor license
- Business; required for plumbing subcontractors on residential construction or improvement projects.
- Municipal master or journeyman trade license
- Individual or business; issued by cities such as Hattiesburg (master plumbing and master mechanical contractor licenses), not the state.
Hiring a company, not a person?
MSBOC license (commercial over $50,000, or residential plumbing subcontractor); individual tradespeople are licensed by municipalities
Doing it yourself
A person who does construction or improvement work on their own residence is exempt from the state residential contractor licensing law, though the city may still require a permit (Miss. Code 73-59-15(1)(b))
