What the license should say

In Mississippi you'll see one of these on an electrician's card, bid or truck:

MSBOC commercial license, Electrical Work classification
Business; commercial jobs over $50,000.
MSBOC residential electrical subcontractor license
Business; required for electrical subcontractors on residential construction or improvement projects.
Municipal master or journeyman trade license
Individual or business; issued by cities such as Hattiesburg (master plumbing and master mechanical contractor licenses), not the state.

Hiring a company, not a person?

MSBOC license (commercial over $50,000, or residential electrical subcontractor); individual tradespeople are licensed by municipalities

Doing it yourself

A person who does construction or improvement work on their own residence is exempt from the state residential contractor licensing law, though the city may still require a permit (Miss. Code 73-59-15(1)(b))
