What the license should say
In New Mexico you'll see one of these on a plumber's card, bid or truck:
- MM-1 Plumbing contractor
- Contractor business; piping, fixtures, septic and sewer lines, pools and spas.
- MM-98 Mechanical contractor
- Contractor business; covers MM-1 through MM-4 plus MS-3, MS-6, MS-12 and MS-14 scopes.
- MM-2 Natural gas contractor
- Contractor business; gas piping, fittings and gas-fired heating systems.
- JP Journeyman plumber
- Individual certificate of competence; works under an MM-1 or MM-98 licensed contractor.
Hiring a company, not a person?
CID issues the plumbing or mechanical contractor license (MM-1 or MM-98) to a business entity that employs or is owned by a qualifying party certified by CID for that classification (NMSA 60-13-16); individuals doing the work need a journeyman certificate of competence and may work only for a validly licensed entity.
Doing it yourself
A homeowner may do the plumbing on their own primary residence under a CID homeowner plumbing permit, which requires an isometric drawing and plan review (14.5.2.18 NMAC).
