What the license should say
In South Dakota you'll see one of these on a plumber's card, bid or truck:
- Plumbing contractor
- Licensee with six years of experience who may contract for plumbing work.
- Plumber
- Individual licensed after four years as an apprentice.
- Appliance, sewer and water, or water conditioning installer or contractor
- Specialty licensees limited to that type of installation.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Plumbing contractor license from the Plumbing Commission; the Commission also licenses specialty contractors such as sewer and water, appliance and water conditioning contractors.
Doing it yourself
Under SDCL 36-25-17 a homeowner who owns and lives in a single-family residence or farmstead may do its plumbing after getting a homeowner installation certificate and passing state inspections; rental and commercial property must use a licensed plumbing contractor.
