Electrician licenses in
South Dakota
South Dakota licenses electricians statewide.
Official search run by South Dakota Plumbing Commission (Department of Labor and Regulation) at dlr.sd.gov. We haven't confirmed a separate electrician search; this is the state's contractor search.
What the license should say
In South Dakota you'll see one of these on an electrician's card, bid or truck:
- Electrical contractor
- Licensee who may contract for electrical work; must file a bond with the Commission.
- Journeyman electrician
- Individual who works under the supervision of an electrical contractor.
- Class B electrician
- Individual licensee who must also file the electricians' bond.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Electrical contractor license from the Electrical Commission, with the Electrical Contractor and Class B Electricians' bond on file; the Commission has no online search, so licenses are verified by calling 605-773-3573 or emailing the Commission.
Doing it yourself
A homeowner who owns and lives in a residence or farmstead may do its wiring without a license after getting an approved homeowner permit; this does not cover rental or commercial property.
