What the license should say

In Maryland you may see one of these:

Salesperson: Must be affiliated with and act on behalf of a broker.
Associate Broker: Meets broker requirements but works for a licensed broker.
Broker: Can run a brokerage.

A Maryland real estate salesperson provides services only while affiliated with and acting on behalf of a licensed broker.

The Real Estate Guaranty Fund can reimburse losses caused by a licensee, up to a limit, if a claim is filed in time.

Ask for the license number and the name of the supervising broker, then search both.
