What the license should say
In Maryland you'll see one of these on an electrician's card, bid or truck:
- Master electrician
- Individual; provides own insurance and may contract for electrical work.
- Journeyperson electrician
- Individual; licensed by the state since July 1, 2021.
- Qualified agent
- Master who assigns the license to a single company that provides the insurance.
Hiring a company, not a person?
A business works under a master electrician or qualified agent carrying $300,000 liability and $100,000 property damage insurance; a local registration may also be needed to pull permits
Doing it yourself
All electrical work in Maryland must be performed by a licensed master, journeyperson or supervised apprentice electrician; unlicensed electrical work is illegal
