What the license should say
In Maryland you'll see one of these on an HVAC contractor's card, bid or truck:
- Master HVACR contractor
- Individual; may contract for all HVACR services.
- Master restricted HVACR contractor
- Individual; contracts within a restricted scope.
- Limited HVACR contractor
- Individual; limited contractor scope.
- Journeyman HVACR
- Individual; works under a licensed master.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Master, master restricted or limited contractor license with insurance required to contract; Anne Arundel and Prince George's counties also require a county HVACR license
Doing it yourself
The HVACR licensing law does not limit an individual owner of a single-family dwelling doing HVACR work on a building they own, or on a single-family home they are building to live in (Bus. Reg. 9A-103)
