What the license should say
In Nebraska you'll see one of these on an electrician's card, bid or truck:
- Electrical contractor
- Individual licensed to plan, lay out, install and supervise electrical wiring and equipment for general purposes.
- Class A master electrician
- Individual who plans, lays out and supervises electrical installations for general purposes.
- Journeyman electrician
- Individual who wires or installs electrical systems generally and supervises apprentices.
- Residential journeyman electrician
- Individual who wires or installs electrical systems in residential installations.
- Class B electrical contractor
- Individual who plans, installs and supervises systems up to 400 amps in small residential buildings.
Hiring a company, not a person?
A person may not plan, lay out or supervise electrical installations for others unless licensed by the State Electrical Board as a Class B electrical contractor, an electrical contractor or a Class A master electrician (81-2106), and the electrical contractor license, which needs at least one year as a licensed journeyman or a four-year electrical degree, itself qualifies the holder with no requirement to employ a master electrician (81-2107).
Doing it yourself
The State Electrical Act requires a license only for electrical work done for another, so an owner may wire their own property, but the State Electrical Division still requires a homeowner permit and inspection for that work (Neb. Rev. Stat. 81-2108).
