What the license should say
In North Dakota you'll see one of these on an electrician's card, bid or truck:
- Master electrician
- Individual who plans, lays out and supervises electrical installations; may contract and serve as master of record.
- Journeyman electrician
- Individual who wires, installs and repairs electrical apparatus and power limited systems.
- Class B electrician
- Individual limited to farmstead and residential wiring in one- or two-family dwellings in cities of 2,500 or fewer.
- Power limited electrician
- Individual who plans and supervises installation of power limited (low voltage) systems.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Only a master or power limited electrician may contract for electrical wiring; the business needs a Secretary of State contractor license, a master of record with at least $500,000 liability insurance, and NDSEB electrical contracting approval.
Doing it yourself
State law has no owner exemption for this trade; NDCC 43-09-16 exempts only utility, telecommunications, appliance-dealer, industrial-machinery, nonelectrical and residential power-limited work, so a permit and a licensed electrician are required even in your own home (NDCC 43-09-16).
