What the license should say
In Rhode Island you'll see one of these on an electrician's card, bid or truck:
- Electrical contractor (Certificate A)
- Business entitled to conduct business as an electrical contractor, naming a qualifying member or officer who passed the exam.
- Journeyperson electrician (Certificate B)
- Individual authorized to work as a journeyperson electrician, as an employee of a licensee.
- Limited-premises or limited-maintenance license
- Individual restricted to maintenance work on specific premises.
Hiring a company, not a person?
A person, firm or corporation may not engage in electrical work without a license and certificate; a business holds Certificate A naming a qualifying member or officer who passed the exam.
Doing it yourself
RIGL 5-6-29 and 5-6-2 allow an owner who lives or will live in a single-family or two-family dwelling to install electrical work there, except removing and reattaching electric meters.
