What the license should say
In Rhode Island you'll see one of these on an HVAC contractor's card, bid or truck:
- Master refrigeration contractor
- Individual with a regular place of business who performs refrigeration and air conditioning work.
- Master pipefitting contractor
- Individual with a regular place of business who performs pipefitting work such as heating piping.
- Master sheet metal contractor
- Individual with a regular place of business who performs sheet metal and duct work.
- Journeyperson refrigeration technician, pipefitter or sheet metal worker
- Individual who performs the trade work under a master.
Hiring a company, not a person?
A corporation or firm may not do business as a mechanical, pipefitting, refrigeration or sheet metal contractor unless a licensed master in that trade who is an officer or partner supervises the work or the entity holds a DLT contractor's license.
Doing it yourself
RIGL 28-27-6.1 lets an owner of a single-family dwelling who will occupy it install pipefitting, refrigeration, sheet metal or sprinkler work without a license after local approval and a permit.
