What the license should say
In Utah you'll see one of these on an electrician's card, bid or truck:
- Master Electrician
- Individual; required qualifier for an electrical contractor license.
- Residential Master Electrician
- Individual; may qualify a residential electrical contractor license.
- Journeyman Electrician
- Individual electrician license issued by DOPL.
- Residential Journeyman Electrician

Hiring a company, not a person?
Electrical contractor license from DOPL; the applicant must be a licensed master electrician (a residential electrical contractor may use a master or master residential electrician).
Doing it yourself
Utah Code 58-55-305(1)(j) exempts owners and lessees of property doing work on their own property, and 58-55-305(1)(d) exempts a sole owner building no more than one residential structure per year for noncommercial, nonpublic use.
