What the license should say
In Utah you'll see one of these on a plumber's card, bid or truck:
- Master Plumber
- Individual; required qualifier for a plumbing contractor license.
- Residential Master Plumber
- Individual; may qualify a residential plumbing contractor license.
- Journeyman Plumber
- Individual plumber license issued by DOPL.
- Residential Journeyman Plumber
- Individual plumber license limited to residential work.
- Plumbing Contractor
- Business contractor license issued by DOPL Contracting.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Plumbing contractor license from DOPL; the applicant must be a licensed master plumber (a residential plumbing contractor may use a master or master residential plumber).
Doing it yourself
Utah Code 58-55-305(1)(j) exempts owners and lessees of property doing work on their own property, and 58-55-305(1)(d) exempts a sole owner building no more than one residential structure per year for noncommercial, nonpublic use.
