Arizona

What the license should say
In Arizona you'll see one of these on an HVAC contractor's card, bid or truck:
- CR-39 Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Heating (dual)
- Business; covers both residential and commercial HVAC work.
- R-39 Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, including solar (residential)
- Business; comfort air conditioning, refrigeration, evaporative cooling, ventilating and heating in homes.
- C-39 Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (commercial)
- Business; commercial HVAC work.
- CR-58 Comfort Heating, Ventilating, Evaporative Cooling (dual)
- Business; heating and evaporative cooling without refrigeration.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Arizona licenses the contracting business, not individual tradespeople, because employees working for wages for a licensed contractor are exempt from licensing (ARS 32-1121(A)(11)); ask for the ROC license number and check that its classification covers the work, and note that a complaint to the ROC must be filed within two years of project completion (ARS 32-1162).
Doing it yourself
Property owners may do work themselves on structures intended solely for their own occupancy, and unlicensed persons may do casual or minor work under $1,000 when no building permit is required (ARS 32-1121).
