What the license should say
In Idaho you'll see one of these on an HVAC contractor's card, bid or truck:
- HVAC contractor
- Business or person that fabricates, installs, maintains, services and repairs heating, water heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems (Idaho Code 54-5003).
- HVAC journeyman
- Individual; installs, alters or repairs HVAC systems in the employ and under the direction of an HVAC contractor.
- Specialty or limited heating specialty contractor and journeyman
- Limited to a specific aspect of the trade such as gas piping, gas appliances or decorative gas-fired appliances.
Hiring a company, not a person?
An HVAC contractor certificate of competency; it is unlawful to engage in the HVAC business without a state certificate.
Doing it yourself
A person who installs or maintains an HVAC system in a single or duplex dwelling they own or are buying is exempt from the certificate requirement but must follow the HVAC standards and rules (Idaho Code 54-5002).
