What the license should say
In Nevada you'll see one of these on an HVAC contractor's card, bid or truck:
- C-21 Refrigeration and air-conditioning
- Contractor business; may perform any work in the C-21 subclassifications.
- C-21b Air-conditioning
- Contractor business; installs, repairs and maintains equipment that controls air temperature.
- C-21a Refrigeration
- Contractor business; builds and installs refrigeration devices keeping air below 50 degrees F.
- C-21d Maintenance
- Contractor business; repairs or replaces parts of existing air-conditioning and refrigeration systems.
Hiring a company, not a person?
A C-21 refrigeration and air-conditioning license (or a C-21 subclassification) from the Nevada State Contractors Board is required for the business; boilers and hydronic heating fall under C-1.
Doing it yourself
An owner building or improving a residential structure on their own property for their own occupancy, not for sale or lease, is exempt from contractor licensing but must apply to the Board for the owner-builder exemption (NRS 624.031).
