What the license should say
In Oklahoma you'll see one of these on an HVAC contractor's card, bid or truck:
- Mechanical contractor (unlimited HVAC/R)
- Permanent employee, owner, partner or officer of the mechanical firm; any cooling or heating equipment.
- Mechanical contractor (limited HVAC/R)
- Limited to cooling equipment of 25 tons or less and heating appliances of 500,000 Btu/h or less.
- Mechanical journeyman
- Individual licensed by exam who works for a mechanical contractor.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Mechanical contractor license held by a permanent employee, owner, partner or officer of the firm, kept active with bond and insurance on file with the CIB.
Doing it yourself
The Mechanical Licensing Act does not apply to a property owner of record doing minor repairs such as cleaning, adjusting, replacing fuses and room thermostats, or installing portable ductless units.
