What the license should say
In Oklahoma you'll see one of these on an electrician's card, bid or truck:
- Electrical contractor (unlimited)
- Owner, partner or officer of the electrical firm with 12,000 hours of experience; can do any electrical work.
- Residential electrical contractor
- Owner, partner or officer limited to wiring one- and two-family dwellings.
- Limited electrical contractor
- Owner, partner or officer who may not do apprentice or journeyman work.
- Journeyman electrician
- Individual licensed by exam who works for a licensed electrical contractor.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Electrical contractor license held by an owner, partner or officer of the firm, kept active with a license bond and general liability insurance on file with the CIB.
Doing it yourself
The Electrical License Act does not require an individual to hold a license to do electrical work on his own property or residence, except as required by local ordinances.
