What the license should say
In Texas you'll see one of these on an HVAC contractor's card, bid or truck:
- Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractor
- Individual contractor license issued as Class A (any size) or Class B (up to 25 tons cooling or 1.5 million Btu per hour heating) with an environmental air conditioning or a commercial refrigeration and process cooling or heating endorsement (1302.253 and 1302.254).
- Registered Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician
- Technician performing non-exempt maintenance must at a minimum be registered with TDLR.
- Certified Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician
- Optional technician certification issued by TDLR.
Hiring a company, not a person?
ACR companies must employ a licensed Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractor in each permanent location.
Doing it yourself
Texas Occupations Code 1302.053 exempts a person doing air conditioning and refrigeration work in a building owned solely by the person as the person's home, though municipal permits and inspections still apply (1302.052).
