What the license should say
In Texas you'll see one of these on a plumber's card, bid or truck:
- Responsible Master Plumber
- Master plumber who holds at least $300,000 liability insurance and supervises plumbing work performed under contracts secured under his or her license.
- Master Plumber
- Individual; may hold both a journeyman and a master license at the same time.
- Journeyman Plumber
- Individual plumber license issued by TSBPE.
- Tradesman Plumber-Limited
- Individual limited plumber license issued by TSBPE.
Hiring a company, not a person?
A plumbing company offers and performs plumbing work under the license of one Responsible Master Plumber, who lets only that company use the license, pulls permits and carries the required insurance (Occupations Code 1301.002(9)).
Doing it yourself
Texas Occupations Code 1301.051 does not require a license for a property owner to perform plumbing in the property owner's homestead.
