What the license should say
In West Virginia you'll see one of these on an HVAC contractor's card, bid or truck:
- HVAC Technician
- Individual with at least 2,000 hours of HVAC work, training and experience licensed for residential and nonresidential systems.
- HVAC Residential Technician
- Individual licensed for residential systems, with nonresidential work allowed only under Commissioner rules.
- HVAC Technician in Training
- Individual who may not work alone and must be directly supervised by an HVAC technician.
Hiring a company, not a person?
No person may perform or offer HVAC work without a Division of Labor certification, and the business needs a Contractor Licensing Board license in the heating, ventilating and cooling classification when a job costs $5,000 or more residential or $25,000 or more commercial (W. Va. Code 30-42-3 and 30-42-5).
Doing it yourself
W. Va. Code 21-16-3 does not apply to a person who personally performs work on an HVAC system in a single family dwelling owned by that person or an immediate family member.
