What the license should say
In West Virginia you'll see one of these on a plumber's card, bid or truck:
- Master Plumber
- Individual who passed the master exam and is competent to design plumbing systems and supervise journeyman plumbers and plumbers in training.
- Journeyman Plumber
- Individual who passed the journeyman exam and is competent to instruct and supervise a plumber in training.
- Plumber in Training
- Individual who has not passed the journeyman exam and may not perform plumbing work alone.
Hiring a company, not a person?
No plumber may perform or offer plumbing work without a Division of Labor plumber license, and the business needs a Contractor Licensing Board license in the plumbing classification when a job costs $5,000 or more residential or $25,000 or more commercial (W. Va. Code 30-42-3 and 30-42-5).
Doing it yourself
W. Va. Code 21-14-3 does not apply to a person who personally performs plumbing work on a single family dwelling owned or leased by that person or an immediate family member.
