What the license should say
In Wisconsin you'll see one of these on an HVAC contractor's card, bid or truck:
- HVAC Contractor registration
- Organization credential; no person, entity or business may engage in installing or servicing heating, ventilating or air conditioning equipment without it.
- HVAC Qualifier certification
- Individual who passed the HVAC qualifier exam; a business using a qualifier is a certified HVAC business that localities may not separately license.
Hiring a company, not a person?
HVAC contractor registration from DSPS is required for any business installing or servicing HVAC equipment (Wis. Stat. 101.178(2)), and employing a certified HVAC qualifier makes the business a certified HVAC business.
Doing it yourself
SPS 305.70 does not require HVAC contractor registration to install or service HVAC equipment in a dwelling the person owns and resides or will reside in.
