What the license should say
In Wisconsin you'll see one of these on a plumber's card, bid or truck:
- Master Plumber
- Individual; requires completed experience as a journeyman plumber or a qualifying engineering degree.
- Journeyman Plumber
- Individual plumber license issued by DSPS.
- Master Plumber Restricted (Service or Appliance)
- Individual limited to private sewer and water service work or appliance connections.
- Journeyman Plumber Restricted (Service or Appliance)
- Individual limited to private sewer and water service work or appliance connections.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Wisconsin licenses individuals; no person may install plumbing without a DSPS license or registration as a master plumber, journeyman plumber, restricted plumber, apprentice, learner, utility contractor or pipelayer.
Doing it yourself
Wis. Stat. 145.06(4) does not apply to plumbing work done by a property owner in a one-family building owned and occupied as his or her home or farm building, except where local ordinance requires a license.
