What the license should say
In Vermont you'll see one of these on a plumber's card, bid or truck:
- Master Plumber (PM)
- Licensed person who as a business installs plumbing systems, employs people to do plumbing work, or supervises journeyman and apprentice plumbers.
- Journeyman Plumber (PJ)
- Licensed person who installs plumbing under the direction of a master plumber and may not act as a master plumber.
- Plumbing Specialist (PS)
- Individual limited to a specialty such as water heater (P1), heating system (P2) or water treatment (P3).
Hiring a company, not a person?
Vermont licenses individuals only; a master plumber is the license holder who, as a business, installs plumbing systems and employs others to do plumbing work.
Doing it yourself
26 V.S.A. 2198 requires no license for plumbing and specialty work by an owner or the owner's regular employees in the owner-occupied, freestanding single family dwelling or its accessory outbuildings.
