What the license should say
In Alabama you'll see one of these on an electrician's card, bid or truck:
- Electrical contractor (master electrician)
- Individual or firm; plans, lays out and supervises electrical installations and solicits electrical work.
- Journeyman electrician
- Individual; installs wiring and equipment and must work under a master or state certified electrical contractor.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Electrical contractor license from the Board of Electrical Contractors, which the board also calls a master electrician; the license is issued only to an individual, including a person in a firm or corporation, and a company as such is not licensed (Code of Alabama 34-36-7(c)).
Doing it yourself
The electrical licensing law does not apply to the owner of any premises, or the owner's employee, performing electrical work or installing, altering or repairing wiring and equipment on those premises (Code of Alabama 34-36-13(a)(5)).
