What the license should say
In Alabama you'll see one of these on an HVAC contractor's card, bid or truck:
- Heating and air conditioning contractor (active)
- Individual certified by exam who performs HVAC installation, service or repair under a business name with a $20,000 bond.
- Refrigeration contractor (active)
- Individual certified by exam who installs or services commercial refrigeration equipment.
- Inactive certification
- Individual who passed the exam but does not perform HVAC or refrigeration work.
Hiring a company, not a person?
An active HVAC or refrigeration contractor certification tied to a business name with a $20,000 performance bond naming the board as obligee.
Doing it yourself
Board rules exempt heating, air conditioning or refrigeration installation, service or repair performed by the owner of a building on that owner's own real property (Ala. Admin. Code 440-X-3-.05(2)).
