Alabama

What the license should say
In Alabama you'll see one of these on a plumber's card, bid or truck:
- Master plumber
- Individual; may register as the principal responsible for a plumbing business.
- Journeyman plumber
- Individual; certified after exam and two years as an apprentice.
- Master gas fitter
- Individual; may register as the principal responsible for a gas fitting business.
- Journeyman gas fitter
- Individual; certified after exam and apprenticeship.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Every plumbing or gas fitting company must register with the board before bidding or working, name a principal master designee, and employ at least one certified master plumber or master gas fitter; registered businesses can be searched at https://alpgfb.igovsolution.net/online/Lookups/Business.aspx.
Doing it yourself
Plumbing work performed by a property owner in or about a building the owner owns or occupies may be done without a certificate, but it remains subject to state and local inspection and approval (Code of Alabama 34-37-15(a)(5) and (b)).
