What the license should say
In Arkansas you'll see one of these on an electrician's card, bid or truck:
- Master electrician
- Individual; plans, lays out and supervises installation, maintenance and extension of electrical conductors and equipment.
- Journeyman electrician
- Individual; installs, maintains and extends electrical conductors and equipment from plans and specifications.
- Residential master electrician
- Individual; master license limited to one to four family dwellings.
- Residential journeyman electrician
- Individual; journeyman license limited to one to four family dwellings.
- Industrial maintenance electrician
- Individual; maintains electrical systems inside industrial or manufacturing facilities only.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Arkansas licenses individual electricians rather than companies; a journeyman cannot contract with the public to plan, lay out or supervise electrical work without employing at least one full-time master electrician, so the business must have a licensed master electrician (17 CAR 210-101(a)(2) and A.C.A. 17-28-304).
Doing it yourself
No license is required to do electrical work on your own primary residence (an unattached single-family home) unless state rules or a local ordinance require it (A.C.A. 17-28-102).
