What the license should say
In Arkansas you'll see one of these on a plumber's card, bid or truck:
- Master plumber
- Individual; skilled in planning, superintending and installing plumbing and must be responsible for plumbing installed in any city or utility district.
- Journeyman plumber
- Individual; engaged in the practical installation of plumbing.
- Restricted plumber
- Individual; qualified for a special phase such as building water or sewer lines.
- Gas fitter
- Individual; licensed by the Department of Health for natural gas piping work.
Hiring a company, not a person?
In any city, town or water, sewer or gas utility district no person or firm may install plumbing unless a licensed master or restricted plumber is responsible for the work (A.C.A. 17-38-301).
Doing it yourself
Plumbing work by a property owner in a building he or she owns and occupies as a home is exempt from state licensing unless a local ordinance requires a license (A.C.A. 17-38-302).
