Electrician licenses in
Missouri
Missouri licenses some electricians statewide and leaves the rest to cities and counties.
Official search run by Missouri Division of Professional Registration, Office of Statewide Electrical Contractors at mopro.mo.gov.
What the license should say
In Missouri you'll see one of these on an electrician's card, bid or truck:
- Statewide electrical contractor license
- Business or individual; optional state license valid in any jurisdiction regardless of local requirements.
- Local electrical contractor license
- Business; issued by a city or county and valid only there.
- Master electrician (local)
- Individual; for example Kansas City issues master and master limited electrician certificates of qualification.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Either a statewide electrical contractor license from the Division of Professional Registration or a local license from the city or county where the work is done
Doing it yourself
The statewide electrical contractor law has no owner exemption (RSMo 324.915 exempts only utility and low-voltage work), and because licensing is local, homeowner permits depend on the city, for example St. Louis issues electrical permits to owner-occupants of single-family homes who pass a short code test
City and county licenses
Some places in Missouri also license electricians locally.
