What the license should say
In New Jersey you'll see one of these on an electrician's card, bid or truck:
- Electrical contractor license
- Individual who passed the three-part exam; the only category of electrical license in New Jersey.
- Business permit
- The electrical contracting business, qualified by a licensed electrical contractor and renewed every three years.
- Class A journeyman electrician
- Individual licensed by the Board (formerly the qualified journeyman registration); works under a licensed electrical contractor.
- Class B wireman
- Individual licensed under P.L.2021, c.479 who performs electrical work under the supervision of a licensed electrical contractor or Class A journeyman electrician.
Hiring a company, not a person?
The business must hold a Board-issued business permit qualified by a licensed electrical contractor, a licensee may qualify only one electrical contracting entity, and from December 31, 2027 every field employee must hold a Board license as a Class B wireman, Class A electrical apprentice, Class A journeyman electrician or electrical contractor (N.J.S.A. 45:5A-11.7 et seq.).
Doing it yourself
Electrical work performed by a person on a dwelling occupied solely as a residence for himself or his immediate family is exempt from the Electrical Contractors Licensing Act (N.J.S.A. 45:5A-18(n)).
