What the license should say
In New Jersey you'll see one of these on a plumber's card, bid or truck:
- Master plumber license
- Individual licensed by the state; the license number of the owner or bona fide representative must appear on vehicles, invoices and ads.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Plumbing may only be performed by a master plumber, an authorized plumbing contractor, or their W-2 employees; the business must display the license number of its owner or qualified bona fide representative.
Doing it yourself
The State Plumbing License Law does not apply to a single family home owner who performs plumbing work on his own dwelling (N.J.S.A. 45:14C-12.4).
