What the license should say
In Oregon you'll see one of these on an electrician's card, bid or truck:
- General supervising electrician (S)
- Individual who designs, plans and lays out work, signs all permits, and is the only person authorized to direct the installation or alteration of an electrical service.
- General journeyman electrician (J)
- Individual who makes any electrical installation under the supervision of a general supervising electrician.
- Limited residential electrician (LR)
- Individual limited to one- and two-family and multifamily dwellings up to three floors above grade, under a general supervising electrician.
- Limited maintenance electrician (LME)
- Individual who repairs and maintains existing electrical installations in an operable plant, commercial building or institution, with no new installations or service work.
- Electrical contractor
- Business licensed by BCD to engage in making electrical installations.
Hiring a company, not a person?
A business may not engage in making electrical installations without an electrical contractor's license from BCD, and the business must also hold a CCB contractor license.
Doing it yourself
ORS 479.540 lets a person make electrical installations without a license on residential or farm property owned by the person or immediate family that is not for sale or rent, with permits and code compliance still required.
