What the license should say
In Oregon you'll see one of these on an HVAC contractor's card, bid or truck:
- CCB licensed contractor
- Business licensed by CCB; heating and air conditioning are listed as work requiring a CCB license.
- Limited maintenance electrician (LME)
- Individual who repairs and maintains existing electrical installations in an operable plant, commercial building or institution, which can include HVAC controls, with no new installations.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Anyone who works for compensation in any construction activity improving real property, including heating and air conditioning, must hold a CCB contractor license.
Doing it yourself
ORS 701.010(7) exempts a person doing work on property that person owns or on their own residence from the CCB contractor license, unless the work is done in a business with intent to sell the structure.
