What the license should say
In Alaska you'll see one of these on an HVAC contractor's card, bid or truck:
- Mechanical administrator license (HVAC, sheet metal or refrigeration)
- Individual; licensed in a category such as Residential HVAC (RHVC), Unlimited HVAC/Sheet Metal (UHVCS), Heating, Cooling and Process Piping (HCPP), Mechanical Systems Temperature Control (CNTL) or Unlimited Refrigeration (UR).
- Mechanical contractor
- Business; may perform the mechanical disciplines its administrator license allows.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Mechanical contractor registration plus a mechanical administrator license in the relevant discipline; installing mechanical controls also requires an electrical administrator license.
Doing it yourself
A person working on an existing structure on their own property, or on their own existing residence, is exempt from contractor registration (AS 08.18.161(9)); a certificate of fitness applies to persons employed to perform the work (AS 18.62.010).
