Alaska

What the license should say
In Alaska you'll see one of these on a plumber's card, bid or truck:
- Mechanical administrator license (plumbing)
- Individual; licensed in the Residential Plumbing and Hydronic Heating (RPHH) or Unlimited Commercial and Industrial Plumbing (UCIP) category and assigned to a mechanical contractor.
- Journeyman plumber certificate of fitness
- Individual; issued by Department of Labor Mechanical Inspection to perform plumbing code work.
- Gas or utility plumber certificate of fitness
- Individual; Department of Labor certificate categories for gas and utility plumbing.
- Mechanical contractor
- Business; state contractor registration for plumbing, heating, sheet metal or refrigeration work.
Hiring a company, not a person?
Mechanical contractor registration plus a mechanical administrator license for plumbing held by the contractor or an assigned individual.
Doing it yourself
A person working on an existing structure on their own property, or on their own existing residence, is exempt from contractor registration (AS 08.18.161(9)); a certificate of fitness applies to persons employed to perform the work (AS 18.62.010).
